    Quail Ridge Park

Located: 5501 Quail Ridge Pkwy, Wentzville, MO 63385  (Near the intersection of I-70 and Highway 40/61)

For directions, click here and then press [Get Directions] near the top left of the Google Maps page

We’ll meet around 14:30 on Memorial Day, Monday May 26th 2013 at the park.

We have not reserved space so we will likely just squat in the first suitable location unless I can get through to someone there.

We will eat, relax, & maybe play a few games, then we will likely start a Kajukenbo workout around 18:00.

This event is NOT our Annual Self-Defense Day, and will be no where near that size or scope but is free and open to the public just the same.

We simply have some students from that area who drive to Fenton a lot and who wanted to not skip class tomorrow so this was what we came up with.

Martial artists -and their families- of all styles and ranks are welcome but if you think you have a crew attending let us know so we can make sure there is enough food.

There are currently only about 8 people attending so again, please call or email Dave with a RSVP if you or others plan to attend.

Check back here for any updates on the location or times.   As always, you can contact Dave with any questions.

  • The effects of an “electronic media epidemic” and a possible solution

Research implies that on average, 730 minutes per day (12 hours & 10 minutes daily) are spent by kids with electronic media like TV/movies, music/audio, video games & computers (including music, texting & games on smartphones).

That comes to roughly 4,428 hours of electronic media use per year.  In the United States, the average number of hours of school instruction per year is 997.

1,456 hours per year are spent by the average child just watching TV, which is like spending the waking hours of 91 days watching TV

It has been observed for years that kids now spend far less time outside or doing physical activities than they do inside playing video games, watching TV and the like.

In our system of Kajukenbo, it only takes an average of 800 hours of “exercise” to get a 1st degree Black belt.

Maybe parents should think about these things considering the growing trend of obesity in this country – in both children and adults.

    Some other tips-

Allow your kids only 1 or 2 hours of “quality” TV or videos per day
Children under the age of 2 should not watch TV – stop using the television as a babysitter.
Do not allow a TV in your child’s room
Do not allow your child to be in sight of a TV while doing homework

  • These are similar to the Beretta 92F (aka M9) replicas we use in class

    Hard Plastic Training Gun

Slightly smaller and a bit lighter than the 92F replicas  I prefer.

The blue one is decent for training but unusually glossy.

The seams on the grips are a bit rough and cut into the web of my thumb but it can be shaved down.

The gun is truly hard plastic with a real trigger guard and a simulated trigger so it is decent for training, but not perfect.

You may be better served by training with a metal (spring-loaded) airsoft gun as long as you do not damage the floor…

Ronin Brand Middleweight Karate uniform – in Black

    Item# ronin-wk
    Price: $40.00 [$37.00 + $3.00 for Black]
Shipping to this area is around $11 – $12

    From the web site:

Every martial artist aspires to the day when crisp, heavyweight canvas arms them in tournament competition. For the intense training required to reach that level, a middleweight uniform is the logical choice. Light enough to enable free, nimble movement, yet durable enough to withstand the moderate abuse of training and sparring, Ronin’s medium weight traditional karate uniform is a welcome addition to any martial artists’ equipment. This 9.5 oz. 100% cotton uniform stays cool in a multitude of climates and conditions, while wicking sweat away from the athlete’s body.

Given Ronin’s impeccable track record for quality, this uniform is a tremendous value at just $37.00. That price doesn’t come at the expense of selection, offered in black or white, and a full range of sizes spanning 00 through 7. Sizes 3 and up come equipped with a stay-fit drawstring, enabling you to customize the fit to your preferred level of snugness. Smaller sizes, 00-2, come with a comfortable elastic waistband that generously accommodates the growth spurts of up-start martial arts youth.

Ronin considered every martial artist’s need for protection as well as movement, allowing ample room for shin, instep and forearm guards. At this affordable price, the medium weight uniform can be paired with a Ronin Brand belt accompanying your level of expertise or a pair of durable Ronin Pine Tree low-cut sneakers. Any level of martial artist can train confidently toward tournament status in this uniform knowing that Ronin is a name synonymous with strength and quality.

[ This gi is tough enough to withstand most Jujutsu & grappling conditions — I’ve never seen one rip or tear — but is not specifically reinforced for it — Dave ]

  • The air shields we have in class

ProForce Curved Body Shield   $69.95 + Free Shipping at Amazon

Alternate source is ProForce Curved Foam Shield at KinjiSan for about $65 (including shipping)

KinjiSan is the same place I get the uniforms from.

Available in Red, Black, or New Blue.
    Measures 30″ high x 15″ wide x 5″ thick

The slightly smaller, unmarked one is from “Tiger Claw”, if I recall correctly.

“Shield – Tiger Claw Foam Kicking Shield”

The Tiger Claw one is currently about $52 on Amazon, including shipping. 29″ x 14″ x 5″

Be sure to check the “More Buying Choices” pricing on the side.

The key is to get large curved shields with handles on the tops/bottoms, not just the sides or middle.

All else being equal, size DOES matter!

  • Our training knives, reasonably priced

I usually have you training with Sharkee training knives like the Daggers, Tantos and Tactical Open Folders.

You can get the Daggers from here for about $15 + shipping.

Amazon.com has the same (black) Daggers here for $17, including free shipping.

Get some 1-sided felt from the craft store (Sharkee calls this “VirtualBlade”) with some sidewalk chalk and you’re ready to rock.

Apparently the red Daggers are not readily available anymore.

If someone knows how to tie paracord handles, I have 100 feet of it here…

  • Klingon Kajukenbo

Some stuff I’ve noticed Lieutenant Worf (and other Klingon warriors) say while watching re-runs of Star Trek: The Next Generation that reminds me of training in Kajukenbo:

    ——————

K’Mtar: [teaching Alexander about fighting] Size is not the most important thing.  Skill, cunning, powers of observation are the most important weapons.

    —  ST:TNG: S7, E21 – Firstborn (23 Apr. 1994)

    ——————

Gowron:  Have you ever fought an idea, Picard?  It has no weapon to destroy, no body to kill.

    —  ST: TNG: S6, E23 – Rightful Heir (15 May 1993)

    ——————

Lieutenant Worf: Trust is earned, not given away!
    —  ST: TNG: S4, E12 – The Wounded (26 Jan. 1991)

    ——————

Lieutenant Worf: [about the bat’leth] Do not think of it as a weapon.  Make it part of your hand – part of your arm. Make it part of you.

    ST: TNG: S4, E7 – Reunion (3 Nov. 1990)

    ——————

Captain Jean-Luc Picard: Lieutenant, I order you to relax.
Lieutenant Worf: [agitated] I *am* relaxed!

    ST: TNG: S2, E20 – The Emissary (24 Jun. 1989)

    * This one reminded me of someone I used to train WITH.  LOL!

     ——————

Lt. Cmdr. Data: For over nine millennia, potential foes have regarded the Zakdorns as having the greatest innately strategic minds in the galaxy.
Lieutenant Worf: So, no one is willing to test that perception in combat?
    Lt. Cmdr. Data: Exactly.
Lieutenant Worf: Then the reputation means nothing.

    ST: TNG: S2, E21 – Peak Performance (8 Jul. 1989)

    ——————

There used to be a book about stuff like this but it is out of print now.  I seem to recall seeing a copy somewhere.
